Dr Michael Neil is a highly experienced Consultant in Anaesthetics and Pain Medicine, specialising in the management of both acute and chronic pain. He combines clinical expertise with a patient-focused approach, offering personalised, evidence-based care to support recovery and improve quality of life.

Dr Neil graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 2001 and completed his anaesthetic training in Glasgow. He then joined NHS Tayside, where he undertook advanced training in pain medicine, becoming a Consultant in Anaesthetics and Pain Medicine in 2010. He also served as Clinical Lead for the Acute Pain Service at Ninewells Hospital.

Currently, Dr Neil practices at Kings Park Hospital, providing both general and regional anaesthesia for a wide range of surgical procedures, including gynaecological, plastic, general, and orthopaedic surgery. He regularly runs outpatient pain clinics, helping patients with complex chronic pain, while also managing acute pain within the hospital setting.

Dr Neil’s approach to pain management is multi-modal and practical, combining physical therapies, pharmacological treatments, and minimally invasive interventional techniques. His clinical interests include:

  • Back pain, sciatica, and musculoskeletal pain
  • Peripheral neuropathic pain and myofascial pain
  • Headache and migraine
  • Chronic post-surgical pain
  • Post-amputation and phantom limb pain
  • Complex regional pain syndrome
  • Hip and knee osteoarthritis

Dr Neil routinely performs minimally invasive procedures such as:

  • Trigger point injections
  • Peripheral nerve blocks- suprascapular, lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh, greater occipital nerve, saphenous, ankle blocks (posterior tibial, sural, deep and superficial peroneal), abdominal cutaneous nerve
  • Botox for myofascial pain, neuropathic pain, spasm or migraine
  • Coccyx injection
  • Shoulder anterior capsule block (for frozen shoulder)
  • Piriformis injection
  • Lumbar epidural steroid injections
  • Lumbar facet joint injections
  • Sacroiliac joint steroid injections

Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Neil is actively involved in medical education, teaching medical students, trainee anaesthetists, and healthcare professionals across the UK. He frequently lectures at national courses and scientific meetings.
