Pilates is a mind and body conditioning exercise programme that benefits the deep postural muscles of the spine to improve overall core stability and posture.

Developed by the late Joseph Pilates, the Pilates method is a mind-body conditioning program initially designed for rehabilitation purposes during the early twentieth century. Pilates was later adopted by dancers as its philosophy blended well with their focus on core strength, co-ordination, flexibility and posture.

Pilates is based on a set of principles which exercise the whole body through a range of mat and equipment based exercises. Pilates combines the co-ordination of deep postural and stability muscles, breathing, and arm and leg movements with postural correction, suppleness and flexibility. With regular practice, Pilates positively changes the body.

More recently Pilates has been adapted by the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI) to provide a specific program for athletes of all levels to increase their speed of rehabilitation.  The APPI Pilates Method is suitable for all ages and levels of ability.

All our classes are delivered by fully qualified Physiotherapists to ensure optimal recovery and progression.  Our classes are held in our purpose built studio and numbers are limited to a maximum of 11 participants.

Pilates Matwork Classes

Matwork classes focus on a series of movements incorporating flexibility, strength and mobility. Our instructors will guide you through the exercises and allow you to progress at your own pace.  We ensure you are as comfortable or challenged as you want to be. Small equipment such as weights, foam rollers and resistance bands are used to enhance the exercises. By keeping the class sizes small, Heal Pilates classes focus on technique and individual progress.

We run Pilates classes every day and all our classes are taught by qualified Physiotherapists. Classes are capped at a maximum of 11 participants per class and run in blocks of 6-8 weeks.

Please note all new Pilates clients are required to attend and induction class prior to booking into a block of Pilates*. Please contact us for details of the next induction class dates.

*If you are have attended Pilates at Heal or elsewhere you please let us know as this may be not required.

 

Pilates Classes

Mixed level- These classes would be ideal for clients who are either new to Pilates or for clients who wish to maintain or improve their level of strength and flexibility. Your physiotherapist will demonstrate the various levels of exercises allowing you to work at a level you are most comfortable in.

Level expected to perform- Level 1-3

Intermediate classes- These classes are ideal for clients who have substantial Pilates experience and are able to demonstrate adequately the key elements of Pilates. This class would be suited to clients who are looking for a bit of a challenge. Clients who wish to attend advanced classes should speak to their physiotherapist.

Level expected to perform- Level 3 and above

 

Pilates for Osteoporosis

Pilates for Osteoporosis is suitable for people of any age group with a diagnosis of Osteopaenia or Osteoporosis, a history of recurrent falls, or a previous history of fractures (including spinal).

Common risk factors of developing Osteoporosis include

  • Early menopause or hysterectomy
  • Long term use of oral steroids
  • Medical conditions that affect the absorption of nutrients in the gut such as coeliac disease
  • Low body mass index

Exercise such as Pilates has a big influence on our bone density. Through weight bearing exercises, strength training and postural improvements exercise has the ability to maintain our bone density, improve balance to help reduce the risk of falling as well as improve flexibility.

A registration form will be sent out to you were you will be asked questions about your general health and any daily activities which you may be having difficulty with. We also require a copy of your most recent bone density scan (DEXA scan). You can request a copy of this from your GP or consultant. If possible, we would prefer that these are returned to us before your first class.

 

Classes will run over a 6 week block for 1 hour. The first session will also include an induction class of 30 minutes to go through the basics of Pilates. Classes will be kept small to ensure you receive enough individual attention. All our classes are thought by qualified physiotherapists who will closely monitor and assist with adaptations to exercises to suit individual needs within your Pilates class.

Pilates appears to be the art of relaxing and doing very little for an hour, then later feeling muscles you didn't know you had reminding you that, actually, you worked very hard for an hour!  Sally is an excellent teacher, always correcting form without appearing over-fussy and adapting to the various ability levels in the class with ease and humour.  Her physiotherapy background is particularly reassuring when I'm being forced out of my comfort zone - all the time! - and the results are well worth the effort.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

Heal Physiotherapy supplies all the equipment for the Pilates classes including floor mats and any equipment needed for the class.

You will be required to wear comfortable clothing with socks.

Heal Physiotherapy also sell all the equipment utilised in our classes including Pilates socks, cushions, weights and balls, should our clients wish to have their own.
